Decontamination of disposable respirators for reuse in a pandemic employing in-situ-generated peracetic acid

The corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to global shortages in personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical staff, specifically disposable respirators.1 The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative pathogen of COVID-19, is transmitted mainly via droplets and aerosols, thus infecting the respiratory tract of susceptible individuals.2–5 As of September 10th 2021, more than 223 million cases and 4.6 million deaths have been reported globally.6 For many countries in Europe and worldwide, incidences of new COVID-19 cases are rapidly increasing.
